Historical Background

School of Physical Fitness (SOPF) was established in BAF with the idea of imparting fitness and survival training to BAF personnel. It started its function in the moth of Jan 1974. Functionally it is controlled by Air Headquarter, (Directorate of Air Training) and administratively it is controlled by BAF BBD. At the beginning, it started imparting sports training to few BAF teams and Physical Instructor’s Basic Training for PTI. In the course of time, SOPF imparted training to the student officers for Survival, Physical Fitness & Watermanship training and to the sportsmen of BAF Athletics, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Swimming & Water polo and Volleyball to participate in the Inter Svc & National Championship. Archery has also been included in BAF Sports from 2015.


It is located at Kurmitola BAF Sports Complex.

Types of training imparted by institution and to whom

Sports Training (Round the Year)

At present BAF is holding Eight discipline i,e BAF Athletics, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Swimming & Water polo, Volleyball and Archery team.

All the teams carry out their yearly training program based on general training method, Sports Medicine, Sports Psychology and Sports Science. Yearly training plan is divided into three parts i,e. preparatory training Part-1, Part-2 & Part-3. At the beginning of the year, all the team members prepare themselves to remain physically fit on the ground. Thereafter, they go for specific sports training and emphasis is given to the specific training for which they participate during the competition. On completion of the competition players of the respective team are given transitional period. In this way, all the teams carry out their practice throughout the year under the supervision School of Physical Fitness, BAF.

Physical Fitness, General Survival & Watermanship Course (Twich in a year)

Physical Fitness, General Survival and Watermanship Course are usually conducted twice in a year under the arrangement of this unit. 20 officers undergo in the Physical Fitness Course (PFC) comprising 10 officers from GD (P)/GD (N) Branch and 10 officers from Ground Branch. 15 officer of GD (P) and GD (N) branch participate in Watermanship course. The course is divided into 02 phases. 1st phase is conducted at SOPF for duration of 07 days. 2nd phase is conducted at BNS Shoheed Moazzem, Kaptai for duration of 10 days.

Physical Fitness and General Survival Course are conducted in BAF C&M (U) LMH and BAF Stn SSN respectively. The duration of the course is 10 days each.

Training Curriculum

Sports training is imparted on the basis of Sports Training Method, General Training Method. Physical Fitness & General Survival training is imparted on the basis of the curriculum given by Air HQ (Dte Air Trg). The Physical Fitness Course (PFC) covers Jogging, Running, Stretching exercise, Gymnastic exercise, Swimming, Route March without food etc.

Selection Criteria

Officers are detailed by Air HQ for Physical Fitness, General Survival and Watermanship Course. Players are selected for different games from Annual Inter Base Sports Competition. Beside this, skilled players from Dist/Club/Org & Ntl level are enrolled in BAF as airmen and MODC (Air).


This is a training Institute based on Physical Fitness and Sports Training. Presently this unit is capable to conduct Physical Fitness Course for officer & airmen of BAF. It also conducts coaches and referee course on different games.
